Description
Whether for the Palaces themselves, or for the collections they house, the Hermitage is the must-see museum during any stay in St. Petersburg. From the antiquities to the Impressionists to the great European schools of art, the largest museum in the world will only surprise and delight you.

The former residence of the Czars, The Hermitage is the most important museum in the world today. Constructed in 1711, and rebuilt by Nicolas I following a fire in 1837, The Hermitage is a jewel in Russian Baroque art, with a collection that comprises more than 3 million items, from antiquities to an impressive collection of works by the Impressionists situated in the General Staff Building. In displaying the artistic masterpieces of both the Western and Russian schools, the Hermitage Museum must be seen on any trip to St. Petersburg. Designated as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, as the historical center of St. Petersburg, the different palaces making up the museum are works of art in themselves.

With your guide, you will travel along the banks of the Neva to discover the most beautiful rooms of the museum, as well as Russian and European masterpieces. Among the numerous objects displayed and the 1000 exhibition rooms, your guide will introduce works known world-wide to you, including ‘The Madonna and the Infant and St. John the Baptist’ by Leonardo da Vinci, ‘The Conestabile Madonna’ by Raphael, and ‘Three Men at a Table’ by Velazquez. You will not only learn more about these works, but also about other collections initiated by the Empress Catherine II on the advice of the French philosopher Denis Diderot, and the history of The Hermitage, the seat of Imperial power.

Because of its history and its collections, the Hermitage is without doubt an absolutely essential tour during any visit to the Venice of the North, and is not to be missed for any reason!
